IKEA PAX vs Custom Wardrobe by Téchne — Detailed Comparison
We compare the IKEA PAX system with Téchne custom wardrobes: dimensions, materials, doors, interior accessories, price range, and exclusive features like 3D visualization and augmented reality.
When it comes to a new wardrobe, two options dominate the market: the modular IKEA PAX system and custom-made furniture. Both have advantages, but the differences are significant. In this article, we compare IKEA PAX with a custom wardrobe configured on the Téchne platform, point by point, to help you make the best decision.
Dimensions: fixed standard vs. centimeter precision
The IKEA PAX system comes in fixed dimensions: widths of 50, 75, and 100 cm per unit, heights of 201 or 236 cm, and a single depth of 58 cm. If your wall is 267 cm, you will combine units (e.g., 100+100+50=250 cm) and be left with 17 cm of unused space on the side. If your ceiling is at 248 cm, the 236 cm unit leaves 12 cm empty above, while the 201 cm one leaves 47 cm — a visual and functional compromise.
With Téchne, the wardrobe is configured to the centimeter, up to 825 cm width, 275 cm height, and 80 cm depth. A wardrobe of exactly 267x248 cm fills the wall completely, with no dead spaces. Each interior column is dimensioned individually, and the top panel adjusts to go around ceiling beams or other obstacles — a feature that does not exist with PAX.
Materials and body finishes
IKEA PAX offers a melamine chipboard body in a few basic colors: white, black-brown, and oak effect. The range is limited and does not change often.
A crucial difference lies in the type of chipboard used. IKEA uses foil-wrapped chipboard (covered with a paper foil), a more affordable material but less resistant to wear and moisture. Téchne exclusively uses high-density melamine chipboard, with a thermoplastic surface that resists scratches, stains, and steam — a superior durability standard.
Furthermore, at Téchne the minimum chipboard thickness is 18 mm everywhere — including drawers, shelves, and side panels. We never use thinner panels anywhere in the construction. This means superior rigidity and higher load capacity on every component.
Téchne offers melamine chipboard in an extensive range of over 30 colors and textures — from golden oak and walnut to concrete grey, matte white, and textured black. You can separately choose the body color and the door color, creating unique combinations. All edges are 2 mm ABS, applied with polyurethane adhesives and industrial machinery, not manually. Polyurethane adhesives are moisture-resistant and hermetically seal the chipboard core — we tested this: a panel submerged in water for 24 hours showed no swelling of the inner core.
Doors: limited frames vs. complete diversity
At IKEA, PAX doors are available in a few hinged and sliding door models. Sliding doors come with aluminum frames in limited colors, and panel options are reduced to melamine chipboard or frosted glass. Mirrors are only available on certain models, with no smoked mirror option.
The Téchne configurator offers a much wider range of fronts:
- Melamine chipboard — the same textures as the body, in all available colors
- Painted MDF — 49 RAL/NCS colors, Soft Touch (ultra-matte) or High Gloss (ultra-glossy) finish. Read the complete painted MDF and ribbed guide
- Ribbed MDF (fluted) — parallel milled grooves, painted in any RAL palette color
- Mirror — clear or smoked (tinted), full door height. See the hinged door mirror guide
- Aluminum frames — with glass, mirror, or chipboard panel, available on both hinged and sliding doors
Each door can be configured individually — you can have a mirrored door next to a painted MDF one, on the same wardrobe.
Compartmentalization and interior accessories
The PAX system uses accessories from the KOMPLEMENT range: clothing rails, shelves, drawers, organizers. They are functional but positioned on pre-set holes at fixed 32 mm intervals (the euronorm drilling system). You cannot place a shelf exactly where you need it — only in the positions allowed by the holes.
With Téchne, every shelf and every drawer is freely positioned within the column. Want a shelf at 143 cm height? Done. Want an 85 cm space for long clothes and a 45 cm one for shirts? Configure it exactly that way. Compartmentalization is done visually, in 3D, and you see exactly how the interior will look before ordering.
Téchne drawers are premium grade: they support up to 40 kg, feature full extension (opening completely for easy access), and soft-close damping. The 18 mm melamine chipboard construction and industrial-quality slides mean a child can sit inside the drawer without it warping or misaligning — a real-world durability test our products pass without issue.
Available accessories include: single and double clothing rails, fixed shelves, premium interior drawers (with full-extension slides and soft-close), pantographs (pull-down rails), trouser racks, and accessory organizers.
3D Visualization and Augmented Reality
IKEA offers a room planning app, but the PAX configurator is limited to a 2D schematic view. You cannot rotate the wardrobe, see how it looks with doors open, or check how it integrates into your actual room.
The Téchne configurator offers:
- Complete 3D visualization — rotate the wardrobe from any angle, open doors virtually, see the compartmentalized interior
- Augmented reality (AR) — place the configured wardrobe in your real room, directly through your phone's camera. Read about the Téchne AR feature
- GLB export — download the 3D model to use in interior design software or send to your architect
- Real-time pricing — every modification updates the price instantly, with no surprises
Assembly and build quality
IKEA PAX furniture is assembled at home, with wooden dowels and screws. Quality is decent for its price, but manual assembly can lead to gaps between panels if you are not experienced. Hardware (hinges, slides) is mid-range — functional but without premium soft-close mechanisms.
Téchne wardrobes come with factory pre-integrated connectors — no nailing or manual screwing. Components join through a quick-connect system that ensures perfect 90-degree angles and superior rigidity. Read about the Téchne connector system. Hardware is Hafele (premium German brand) with damping on all doors and drawers. Delivery is palletized, with each component individually packaged.
Price: what you get for your money
An IKEA PAX wardrobe of 250x236x58 cm, with sliding doors and basic KOMPLEMENT accessories, costs between 3,500 and 6,000 RON, depending on the doors chosen. It is a competitive price, but you get fixed dimensions, standard materials, and mid-range hardware.
Surprisingly, a similarly sized Téchne wardrobe, configured to the centimeter with melamine chipboard doors, costs only about 5% more than IKEA PAX. The price difference is minimal, yet you get: centimeter-precise dimensions, 18 mm melamine chipboard everywhere (not foil-wrapped), premium Hafele hardware, free compartmentalization, factory-integrated connectors, a 5-year warranty, and 3D + AR visualization. With painted MDF doors or aluminum frames, the price rises proportionally, but the quality-to-price ratio remains excellent.
Warranty and durability
IKEA offers a 10-year warranty on the PAX system, which is a strong point. Téchne offers a 5-year warranty on furniture and hardware, with a production time of 2-3 weeks. Read more about warranties.
Verdict: who should choose which
Choose IKEA PAX if:
- You have a strict budget under 4,000 RON
- Standard dimensions fit your space perfectly (rarely happens)
- You do not need premium materials or advanced customization
- You want furniture available immediately, without a production lead time
Choose a custom Téchne wardrobe if:
- Your space does not match standard dimensions (beams, niches, atypical ceilings)
- You want premium materials (painted MDF, smoked mirror, aluminum frames)
- You want free compartmentalization, not limited by pre-drilled holes
- You want to see exactly how the wardrobe will look in your room (3D + AR)
- You prefer premium hardware and assembly with integrated connectors
Delivery and availability
A clear advantage of IKEA PAX is immediate availability — if the desired model is in stock, you pick it up from the store the same day or receive it with fast delivery. However, PAX availability is often problematic: during peak periods (September-October, April-May), certain units or KOMPLEMENT accessories are out of stock for weeks. Popular sliding doors (AULI, HOKKSUND) frequently have delivery delays.
Téchne custom furniture has a fixed production lead time of 2-3 weeks, followed by palletized delivery. The timeline does not depend on stocks — each piece is individually manufactured for your order. Delivery covers all of Romania, and each component arrives individually packaged, on pallets, with full protection for long-distance transport. Read about Téchne national delivery.
Flexibility over time: modifications and extensions
The PAX system theoretically allows adding additional units over time. But in practice, IKEA colors change every few years, and your model may be discontinued. If you want to extend a 2022 white PAX, the 2026 white might be a slightly different shade — a visible visual compromise.
At Téchne, melamine chipboard colors are EGGER or KRONOSPAN industry standards that remain available for years. If in the future you want an extension or a complementary piece (a sideboard, a wall-mounted cabinet), you configure in the same color with certainty that the shade is identical. Additionally, the initial configuration remains saved in your account — you can access it anytime. Additionally, every Téchne order is manually verified by a human operator before production — a level of quality control that a retail chain doesn't offer.
