Furniture with painted MDF doors and ribbed/carved MDF doors — Complete Guide
Complete guide to painted MDF doors (49 RAL/NCS colors, Soft Touch, High Gloss) and ribbed MDF (parallel milled grooves). Differences, advantages, and how to configure them online.
MDF doors are the premium choice for custom furniture — whether it's a wardrobe, hallway cabinet, or sideboard. At Téchne, we offer two main options: painted MDF (solid colors from a palette of 49 RAL/NCS shades) and ribbed MDF (parallel grooves creating a modern fluted look). Both are available in our 3D configurator.
What is painted MDF?
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is a panel made from pressed wood fibers with a perfectly smooth surface. It's painted with multiple layers of polyurethane lacquer, creating a seamless finish with no visible edges. Unlike melamine chipboard, painted MDF delivers a premium look similar to lacquered solid wood — at a more accessible price point.
At Téchne, painted MDF is available in 49 RAL and NCS colors — from neutral tones (white, grey, black) to accent colors (ocean blue, abyss green, terracotta). Browse the full palette in the configurator under Door Design.
Two finishes: Soft Touch and High Gloss
MDF Soft Touch (Ultra-matte) — velvety matte surface, fingerprint-resistant. Ideal for bedrooms and high-traffic areas. Available in 4 variants: White, Cream, Cashmere Grey, Anthracite Grey.
MDF High Gloss (Ultra-glossy) — mirror-like glossy surface that amplifies light. Perfect for living rooms and modern spaces. Available in 4 variants: White, Cream, Cashmere, Chrome Grey.

What is ribbed MDF?
Ribbed MDF is an 18mm MDF panel with parallel V-shaped grooves milled into its surface — strips approximately 10-12mm wide with a depth of 2-3mm, alternating with raised ridges of the same width. The result is a rhythmic, modern fluted texture that's become very popular in contemporary interior design.
After milling, the panel is painted exactly like any other MDF — same RAL/NCS colors, same finishes. The difference is purely visual: the ribbing adds depth and a play of light and shadow, turning a flat surface into a decorative element.
In the Téchne configurator, the ribbed models are Rf 01 and Rf 02 — found under Door Design → Carved MDF. The other available models (N 01, C 01, M 01) are different decorative patterns with unique sculpted forms.
Solid painted MDF vs. ribbed MDF — how to choose?
Choose solid painted MDF if you prefer a clean, minimal look. The smooth surface highlights the color and is easy to maintain. Works in any style — from Scandinavian to industrial.
Choose ribbed MDF if you want your furniture to be a statement piece. The grooves add texture and character without needing additional accessories or handles. Ideal for wardrobes, hallway cabinets, and accent walls.
Both options are painted in the same colors, so you can combine them — for example, solid doors with a ribbed center compartment.
Maintenance
Painted MDF cleans easily with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Soft Touch finish is more resistant to fingerprints, while High Gloss requires more frequent cleaning but delivers a spectacular look. The grooves on ribbed MDF can collect dust — a soft brush handles it quickly.
All Téchne products come with a 5-year warranty and are manufactured in 2-3 weeks. See a configured product example or start configuring from scratch.
How to combine painted MDF and ribbed MDF in the same project
An increasingly popular design strategy is combining solid painted MDF doors with ribbed MDF panels within the same wardrobe or dressing unit. This approach creates visual contrast and depth without complicating the color palette. The Téchne configurator helps with this — it only shows compatible material combinations and warns you if you choose an option that doesn't work structurally.
For example, in a wardrobe configured on the Téchne platform, you can choose the side doors in white Soft Touch painted MDF, while the central compartment features ribbed MDF Rf 01, painted in the same shade of white. The result is chromatically unified furniture with a center element that draws the eye through its texture.
Other effective combinations:
- Ribbed doors on the wardrobe + solid MDF on the sideboard — maintains stylistic coherence between different furniture pieces in the same room
- Solid MDF on the main body + ribbed decorative side panel — ideal for hallway cabinets visible from multiple angles
- Alternating ribbed-solid on consecutive doors — creates an elegant visual rhythm, suitable for wide wardrobes with 4-6 hinged doors
All these combinations can be tested in the Téchne 3D configurator before placing your order — see exactly how the final result looks, rotate the model, and adjust until you are satisfied.
Long-term durability of painted MDF
A frequent question concerns the long-term resistance of painted MDF. The factory-applied polyurethane lacquer forms a continuous film that protects the panel against superficial scratches, stains, and moderate humidity. Unlike PVC foiling (used by budget furniture manufacturers), the paint does not peel off from heat and does not chip at the edges.
With normal maintenance — cleaning with a damp cloth, no abrasive substances — painted MDF doors maintain their original appearance for 10-15 years. The Soft Touch finish has an additional anti-fingerprint layer that keeps the surface immaculate even in high-traffic areas such as the hallway or daily-use wardrobe.
If you desire a color change over time, MDF doors can be repainted without replacement — a unique advantage over melamine chipboard or PVC foil, which cannot be aesthetically reused.
