How to Configure a Custom Bookcase
Step-by-step guide to configuring a custom bookcase: dimensions, compartments, doors, and integration into your living room or office.
Why choose a custom bookcase
A bookcase isn't just a shelf for books — it's a furniture piece that defines the personality of a living room, office, or bedroom. A custom bookcase adapts perfectly to your wall, with no side gaps or wasted space above. Whether you have an impressive book collection or want a mix of open and closed storage, custom configuration gives you total control.
With the Téchne configurator, you can design a bookcase from scratch, choosing every shelf, drawer, and compartment. The result is a unique piece, built exactly to your space and needs.
Dimensions and planning
Width and height
The first step is measuring the wall correctly. A bookcase can cover an entire wall (250-400 cm wide) or be a compact 80-120 cm piece. Standard height is 210-240 cm, but you can go floor-to-ceiling to maximize storage.
For full walls, we recommend dividing into 80-100 cm wide modules. This makes transport and assembly easier and allows combining different compartment types.
Depth — the decisive factor
Standard depth for books is 25-30 cm. If you want to store decorative objects, photo albums, or folders, choose 35 cm. For a multimedia bookcase with audio-video equipment, 40-45 cm provides enough space. Check the cost page to estimate your budget based on dimensions.
Types of compartments
The beauty of a custom bookcase lies in the mix of compartments. Here are the most popular combinations:
- Open shelves — classic, providing quick access and displaying books and decorative objects
- Door compartments — hide clutter and protect items from dust
- Drawers — perfect for documents, magazines, or small accessories
- Equipment niches — open space at the back for cables and ventilation
You can combine all these elements in a single piece using the dresser configurator for the lower section and the wardrobe configurator for the upper part.
Integration with TV and living room
One of the most popular configurations is the bookcase with a TV niche. The central niche, usually 120-140 cm wide and 80-90 cm tall, houses the television, while side modules provide symmetrical storage. This solution eliminates the need for separate TV furniture and creates a unified, elegant wall.
For cables, plan pass-through holes behind the niche. Wall-mounted units on either side of the TV complete the ensemble.
Recommended materials and finishes
For bookcases, melamine chipboard is the most popular material thanks to its excellent quality-to-price ratio and the variety of available textures. Natural oak or light walnut textures add warmth, while matte white creates a modern, bright look.
For a premium look, you can combine chipboard with painted MDF fronts on closed compartment doors. Learn more about options in our guide on painted MDF and fluted panels.
