How to Choose the Perfect Nightstand — Dimensions, Storage, and Materials

Complete guide to choosing the right nightstand: correct height relative to mattress, proportional width to bed, storage types (drawers, shelves, doors), materials, and matching with the rest of the bedroom.

The nightstand is probably the most underestimated piece of furniture in the bedroom. Although small in size, the impact of a well-chosen nightstand is enormous: it completes the bedroom aesthetic, provides essential at-hand storage, and can become a design element that ties the entire room together. In this guide, we cover everything you need to know to choose the perfect nightstand.

The golden rule: height relative to mattress

The most important rule when choosing a nightstand is height. The top surface of the nightstand should be at the same level as the top of the mattress, or a maximum of 5 cm higher. This is the ergonomic height — your hand naturally reaches the phone, book, or glass of water on the nightstand without stretching.

How to calculate:

  • Measure the height from the floor to the top surface of the mattress (including the bed frame/base)
  • The ideal nightstand has the same height or 2-5 cm more
  • Practical examples:
    • Bed with slatted base on legs (total mattress at 50-55 cm): nightstand of 50-58 cm
    • Continental / boxspring bed (total mattress at 60-65 cm): nightstand of 60-68 cm
    • Futon-style / low bed (total mattress at 30-40 cm): nightstand of 30-42 cm

With the Téchne configurator, you can set the nightstand height to the centimeter, ensuring it perfectly matches your existing bed.

Width: proportion with the bed

The nightstand width should be proportional to the bed, as well as to the available space on its sides.

  • Single bed (90-120 cm wide): nightstand of 30-40 cm width
  • Double bed (140-160 cm wide): nightstand of 40-50 cm width
  • King-size bed (180-200 cm wide): nightstand of 45-60 cm width

Visual rule: the nightstand should not exceed the width of the bed viewed from the side. A nightstand too wide relative to the bed looks disproportionate; one too narrow looks lost.

Minimum side clearance: between wall/wardrobe and nightstand, leave at least 5 cm. Between nightstand and bed, 0-3 cm is ideal — as close as possible without blocking the bedding.

Depth: how much it extends into the room

The nightstand depth (how far it extends into the room from the wall behind the bed) influences bedroom circulation:

  • Small (25-35 cm): ideal for small bedrooms or when the bed is close to a side wall
  • Medium (35-45 cm): standard, suitable for most bedrooms
  • Large (45-55 cm): offers more storage space but requires a spacious bedroom

A useful rule: the nightstand depth should not exceed the pillow depth when it is placed on the bed. Visually, the nightstand remains aligned with the headboard plane.

Storage types: drawers, shelves, or doors

Storage is the primary function of the nightstand (besides supporting the lamp). The storage type depends on what you keep on the nightstand and on the desired aesthetic style.

Nightstand with drawers

The most popular option. Drawers hide objects and maintain a clean look. Ideal for:

  • Medications, creams, small accessories
  • Chargers, cables, headphones
  • Books currently being read

Recommendation: 1-2 drawers are sufficient. One deep drawer of 15-20 cm is more practical than two very small drawers. Choose drawers with full-extension slides and soft-close damping — they open easily, even in the dark, and close silently without waking your partner.

Nightstand with open shelf

The open shelf (niche) provides instant access to nightstand items — perfect for a phone on charge, reading glasses, or remote control. The downside: everything is visible, so tidiness must be maintained.

Recommendation: the ideal combination is an open shelf on top (for daily-use items) and a drawer below (for items you want to hide).

Nightstand with door

A hinged door offers a minimal look and completely hides the interior. Useful if you store larger items (books, albums, tablets) or prefer a very clean appearance.

Recommendation: opt for a door with soft-close, and if space allows, with an interior shelf to avoid everything in a pile.

Minimalist nightstand (top surface only)

The current trend in modern design favors minimalist nightstands — a suspended top surface with no storage. It works aesthetically but offers zero storage. We recommend this style only if you have a large wardrobe nearby that absorbs everything you need.

Materials and finishes

The nightstand should be made from the same materials (or complementary ones) as the rest of the bedroom furniture — especially the wardrobe.

Melamine chipboard

The most accessible option, available in dozens of colors and textures. Ideal if the wardrobe is also chipboard — choose the exact same color for a perfect match. Durable, easy to maintain, excellent quality-price ratio.

Painted MDF

Smooth surface without wood texture, available in 49 RAL/NCS colors. Soft Touch (matte, velvety) or High Gloss (glossy) finish. Ideal for modern bedrooms or when you want an accent color that does not exist in the chipboard range. Complete painted MDF guide.

Material combinations

You can combine materials on the same nightstand: natural oak chipboard body with the drawer front in white painted MDF — an elegant contrast that links the warm tones of wood with the linear elegance of painted finishes.

How to match the nightstand with the rest of the bedroom

Option 1: Coordinated set

The safest choice: nightstands in exactly the same material and color as the wardrobe. Creates a unified, harmonious bedroom with no aesthetic risks. With the Téchne configurator, select the same body and front color for both pieces.

Option 2: Calculated contrast

Dark wardrobe (black, anthracite, walnut) + light nightstands (white, cream) — or vice versa. Creates visual dynamism, but there must be a connecting element (for example, handles in the same color, or identical edging).

Option 3: Common material, different dimensions

If the wardrobe has painted MDF fronts, the nightstands can have the drawer face in the same MDF, but a different body. The common element (the MDF) visually links the pieces without making them identical.

Custom nightstands vs. standard nightstands

Standard nightstands come in fixed dimensions (usually 40x40x45 cm or 50x35x50 cm). If your bed is at an atypical height or side space is limited, a standard nightstand simply does not fit.

With the Téchne sideboard configurator, you can create nightstands with exact dimensions:

  • Height from 25 cm to 100 cm (to the centimeter)
  • Width from 25 cm to 200 cm
  • Depth from 25 cm to 80 cm
  • Number of drawers, shelves, and doors as desired
  • Material and color from the same range as the wardrobe
  • Price visible in real time, updated with every modification

Checklist before ordering

  1. Measure mattress height from floor -> nightstand within +/-5 cm
  2. Measure available side space -> nightstand width with 5 cm margin
  3. Decide storage type -> drawer + open shelf = the universal combination
  4. Choose material -> same color as wardrobe or calculated contrast
  5. Configure in the Téchne configurator and visualize in 3D
  6. Order the pair (2 identical pieces) for symmetry

Nightstand styling ideas

The nightstand is not just a functional object — it is also a decor element. Here are some styling ideas that transform the nightstand into a visual accent:

  • Statement lamp — a lamp with interesting design (ceramic, wooden base, textured shade) turns the nightstand into a focal point. Lamp height: the base of the shade should be at eye level when lying in bed
  • Book stack — 2-3 stacked books create a warm, personal visual effect. Works excellently on an open shelf
  • Small plant — a succulent or small houseplant adds life and color. Choose plants that tolerate low light if the bedroom does not have direct light
  • Decorative tray — a small tray in wood, marble, or metal organizes small items (jewelry, keys, coins) and prevents clutter
  • Minimal and clean — if you prefer minimalism, a nightstand with a single object (lamp or plant) and a closed drawer creates the most airy effect

Asymmetric nightstands — the modern trend

The current trend in interior design no longer requires identical nightstands on both sides of the bed. Asymmetric nightstands — same color but different dimensions, or same material but different models — create a bedroom with personality. You can configure a wider nightstand with drawers on your side (for more storage) and a narrower one with an open shelf on your partner's side.

With the Téchne configurator, you create each nightstand individually, at the exact desired dimensions, and match them through material and color while maintaining freedom of form.

Nightstand maintenance

Nightstands are exposed to daily wear — water glasses that can leave marks, books that scratch, phones and chargers dragged across the surface. A few maintenance tips:

  • Melamine chipboard: clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid standing water on the surface — wipe spilled liquids immediately
  • Painted MDF Soft Touch: microfiber cloth, no abrasive products. The anti-fingerprint surface is easy to maintain
  • MDF High Gloss: requires more frequent cleaning but offers a spectacular look. Use products specifically designed for glossy surfaces
  • Use coasters for glasses — water rings are the most common type of nightstand damage

All Téchne nightstands come with a 5-year warranty and are manufactured with the same CNC precision as wardrobes. Complete furniture maintenance guide. The intelligent configurator automatically checks dimensional and material compatibility, preventing any configuration errors. And your order is reviewed by a human operator before manufacturing.
