The Right Handles for Matt Fronts: a 2026 Pairing Guide

Matt fronts are the trend that refuses to leave: velvety, reflection-free surfaces that make furniture look calm and expensive at the same time. But a matt front only shows its true face once you choose the right handle for it — or the wrong one. A shiny chrome handle on an ultra-matt black front can undo the very effect you paid for. This guide walks through the handle options in the Téchne configurator and the pairing rules that actually work on matt surfaces.

What “matt front” means at Téchne

In the materials gallery you will find several families of matt surfaces: ultra-matt laminated MDF — edged with ultra-matt foil, with a velvety, reflection-free finish that is pleasant to touch; matt painted MDF, available in more than 50 colours, and in any RAL or NCS shade for large orders; and the solid-colour melamine decors with a subtle surface, such as Soft Black (U899 ST9) or the recently added Arctic–Silk–Stone grey series. They all share the same sensitivity: on matt, any glossy element instantly becomes the focal point of the piece.

The handle finishes that love matt

The configurator offers handles in several finishes, and on matt fronts three of them dominate:

• Matt black — the safe choice. It runs across nearly the whole range: the steel RiexTouch XH01 and XH02 bars, the zamak XH63 with its ribbed Ø10 mm bar, the XK02 knob (Ø20 mm) and the conical aluminium XK05 knob (Ø25 mm). On a matt black front, a matt black handle all but disappears — the monolithic effect you see in magazine kitchens and dressing rooms. On matt grey or beige, black becomes a crisp graphic accent;
• Matt gold — the warm accent. Available on the XH63 and the XK05 knob, it turns a matt black or matt blue front (Tyrolean Blue, for instance) into a piece with hotel-bar flair. Crucially: matt gold, not glossy — it is precisely the absence of shine that keeps it elegant;
• Stainless and aluminium — the technical neutrals. On matt grey they work tone-on-tone, more discreet than polished chrome, which remains better suited to glossy surfaces.

A special mention for the 3996 edge profile in matt black: it mounts on the edge of the front, with screws driven from behind, no routing, leaving the front perfectly smooth. For minimalist ultra-matt designs — where not even the handle is allowed to stand out — it is the cleanest solution in the configurator. It comes in 120, 300 and 1200 mm lengths.

Three proven pairing recipes

• Monolith: black on black. A Soft Black or ultra-matt black MDF front + a matt black XH63 or the black 3996 edge profile. The piece reads as a single volume, and the matt texture takes centre stage;
• Warm contrast: gold on dark. A matt black or blue front + a matt gold XK05 or XH63. It works best in small doses — knobs on drawers rather than bars across every door;
• Grey tone-on-tone. A Silk Grey or Stone Grey front + stainless or aluminium handles. The most discreet recipe, ideal when the furniture should recede and let the room breathe.

The practical details that show over time

Matt surfaces forgive fine scratches better than glossy ones, but they are more sensitive to fingerprints — especially the dark shades. Hence two practical tips. One: choose handles you can genuinely grip. A bar standing more than 30 mm off the front (the XH01 stands at 32 mm) keeps your fingers on the handle rather than the front, so the front stays clean longer. Two: check the spec sheet before deciding — every handle in the configurator carries a tooltip with the manufacturer's specifications: dimensions, hole spacing, material and mounting.
