DIY Furniture Assembly: A Guide to Assembling Custom Téchne Furniture

Learn how to assemble custom Téchne furniture yourself: expandable connectors, numbered panels, digital sketches, and step-by-step video tutorials. Simpler than you think.

The idea of assembling your own custom furniture may seem intimidating at first glance. Large wardrobes, many pieces, precise measurements — it sounds complicated. But the reality is entirely different: Téchne furniture has been designed from the start for easy assembly, and our expandable connector system makes the process accessible to anyone with a screwdriver and 2-3 free hours.

Expandable connectors: the secret to simple assembly

Forget about traditional screws that require drilling, measuring, and perfect alignment. Expandable connectors are a modern joining system that works through insertion and expansion: you insert the connector into the factory pre-drilled hole, turn it with a screwdriver, and the connector expands and locks the panels together with a clamping force superior to traditional screws.

The advantages are evident:

  • No drill needed — all holes are pre-drilled with CNC precision in the factory
  • 1-2 tools are sufficient — a Phillips screwdriver and optionally a rubber mallet for alignment
  • Reversible connection — if you get the order wrong, you can undo and redo without damaging the material
  • Perfect alignment — hole positions are digitally calculated, and panels join at exactly 90 degrees

If you are not familiar with this system, we recommend also reading our dedicated article: Expandable connectors — how they work and why they are better.

Numbered panels: no confusion

Each panel in the package comes with a unique number printed on an adhesive label, positioned on the interior face (invisible after assembly). The numbers correspond exactly to the digital assembly sketch you receive. You do not need to measure panels to guess which goes where — look for the number on the label, identify it in the sketch, and mount it in the indicated position.

The numbering system eliminates the most frequent source of assembly errors: confusing similar panels. Two wardrobe sides may look identical but have holes positioned differently. The numbers guide you without ambiguity.

Clear and detailed digital sketches

Together with the furniture, you receive digital assembly sketches that show:

  • Each panel with its number and correct position
  • Step-by-step assembly order
  • The exact position of each connector
  • Insertion direction for asymmetric pieces
  • Details for Hafele hardware (hinges, runners, lift systems)

The sketches are automatically generated from your 3D project, so they are specific to exactly your furniture — they are not generic instructions valid for dozens of different models.

Video tutorials: see before you do

In addition to digital sketches, we have video tutorials that show you the complete assembly process for each type of furniture. You can watch the video before starting, to get an overview, and can return to specific moments when you reach a particular step. The videos also cover Hafele hardware installation: adjusting soft-close hinges, installing drawer runners, and adjusting lift systems for overhead doors.

How long does assembly take

Assembly time depends on the complexity of the piece, but here are some realistic estimates:

  • Dresser with 3-4 drawers — 1-1.5 hours
  • Wardrobe with 2 doors — 2-3 hours
  • Bookshelf with 5-6 shelves — 1.5-2 hours
  • Complete bedroom set — 4-6 hours (we recommend two people)
  • Walk-in closet — 3-5 hours (depending on the number of units)

These times include unpacking, assembly, and wall mounting (if applicable). They are estimates for a person with no prior experience — if you have assembled furniture before, you will be significantly faster.

Practical tips for successful assembly

A few recommendations from our team's experience and from customers who assembled on their own:

  • Unpack all panels and identify them by number before starting assembly
  • Work on a flat, clean surface — the floor of the room where the furniture will be placed is ideal
  • Follow the order in the digital sketch step by step, without skipping stages
  • Do not fully tighten connectors until you have assembled the entire unit — partially tighten, check alignment, then fully tighten
  • For tall wardrobes (over 200 cm), ask for a second person's help when raising it to a vertical position

What if you need help

If you encounter a difficulty during assembly, the Téchne team is available by phone or WhatsApp for real-time assistance. You can send a photo of the situation and receive immediate guidance. In exceptional cases, we can schedule a professional installer to complete the assembly.

Assembling custom furniture does not have to be a stressful challenge. With expandable connectors, numbered panels, and clear digital sketches, the process is simpler than you expect. Configure your furniture in the Téchne configurator and enjoy the satisfaction of assembling it with your own hands.

Required tools — complete list

To assemble Téchne furniture you need a minimal set of tools that most people already have at home: a Phillips screwdriver (size 2), a rubber mallet for panel adjustment, a tape measure of at least 3 metres for verification, a 40-60 cm spirit level to ensure the wardrobe is straight, and a set of wall plugs with 6-8 mm screws for wall fixing (included in the package). Optionally, a torch or phone flashlight helps you see inside the units during assembly. You do not need a drill, saw, or other power tools — expandable connectors completely eliminate this requirement.
