TV wall and suspended sideboard: modern minimalist living room furniture

Inspiration for your living room TV wall. Ideas for suspended sideboards, cable management, open and closed compartments, and the floating furniture effect.

The TV wall is the visual centre of any modern living room. It is no longer just a wall-mounted television with a table beneath it — it is a furniture ensemble that combines aesthetics, functionality, and order. A suspended sideboard, designed to order, transforms the TV wall into a design element that defines the entire room.

The floating furniture effect

The visual difference between a sideboard placed on the floor and a suspended one is dramatic. Suspended furniture creates a sense of lightness — the room appears more spacious, the floor remains visible, and cleaning becomes much simpler (the vacuum passes freely underneath). Mounting is done on concealed metal brackets fixed directly into the masonry or concrete wall. The result: the sideboard appears to float, with no visible supports.

The open-closed combination

A successful TV wall combines open and closed compartments in a carefully calculated visual balance:

  • Closed compartments (with doors) — for everything you do not want visible: cables, routers, gaming consoles, DVDs, remotes, and accessories that create visual clutter. Push-to-open doors (handleless) maintain the clean furniture line.
  • Open compartments (niches) — for decorative objects that give personality to the living room: books, vases, plants, photo frames, collectibles. Niches can be illuminated with integrated LED for a dramatic evening effect.
  • Drawers — for organised storage: drawers with Hafele slides for magazines, board games, small electronics. Suspended drawers function identically to floor-level ones — full-extension slides support up to 30 kg.

Cable management: invisible order

Cables are the biggest enemy of an aesthetic TV wall. A custom furniture ensemble solves this problem through:

  • Integrated cable channels — the back of the sideboard has cutouts and channels through which cables from the TV, soundbar, console, and router are routed invisibly to the socket.
  • Hidden power strip — a multi-socket power strip mounted inside a closed compartment, so no cable is visible from the front.
  • Ventilation openings — compartments housing electronic equipment have discreet ventilation grilles to prevent overheating.

Dimensions and proportions

The correct proportion between TV and furniture is essential for a balanced appearance:

  • Ensemble width — should be at least 40-60 cm wider than the television on each side. A 55-inch TV (125 cm wide) looks best on a furniture ensemble of at least 200-250 cm.
  • Suspended sideboard height — typically 25-40 cm tall, mounted 40-50 cm from the floor. This position creates visual balance with the TV mounted above.
  • Depth — 35-45 cm is sufficient for a TV sideboard (less than a standard 60 cm wardrobe). The reduced depth maintains a slim profile and does not crowd the room.

Materials and finishes for the living room

The living room is the showcase space of the house, and the furniture should reflect this:

  • Matte painted MDF — perfect surface, available in any RAL colour. Matte white remains the classic choice for a clean look, but warm greys (greige, taupe) are increasingly popular.
  • Natural wood veneer — oak, walnut, or ash, with matte lacquer, brings warmth and natural texture. The combination of white body with veneer fronts is a modern classic that never goes out of style.
  • Metallic accents — brushed brass inserts, black profiles, or slim metal legs can add an element of refinement. Profile handles, integrated into the front, maintain the minimalist line.

Integrated lighting

Integrated LEDs transform TV wall furniture from a functional element into an atmospheric one. LED strips mounted in niches, under the suspended sideboard, or behind the TV (ambient backlight) create light layers that make the living room much more welcoming in the evening. Recommended colour temperature: 3000K (warm white) for a relaxing atmosphere.

Get inspired and configure

The TV wall is where design meets technology. A custom furniture ensemble ensures every cable is hidden, every decorative object has its place, and the proportions are perfect for your space. Configure your living room furniture here.

Complementary tall cabinets

A TV wall ensemble can be completed with tall cabinets on the sides — vertical units from floor to ceiling that flank the TV zone. These cabinets provide massive storage for board games, photo albums, vinyl collections, or audio-video equipment. Hafele hinged doors open to 110 degrees, providing full access to the interior. Fronts in painted MDF or ribbed MDF add texture and character to the ensemble, transforming the TV wall from a simple entertainment area into an architectural element of the living room.

How to configure the TV wall ensemble

In the Téchne configurator, you can design the suspended sideboard with exact dimensions, choosing between open and closed compartments. The 35-45 cm depth, specific to living room furniture, is available as a standard option. Preview the ensemble in 3D, experiment with colour and texture combinations, and see the price updated in real time. Production takes 2-3 weeks, and wall mounting is included.
