Lift-up doors: the guide to lift mechanisms and dampers

Doors that open upwards have become a standard of modern furniture: on wall-mounted living-room cabinets, on units above the desk, on tall hallway cabinets. The reason is practical — a lifted door does not occupy the space in front of the cabinet and you do not hit your head on it. But an upward-opening door needs a lift mechanism to hold it open and lower it in a controlled way. We recently added the Mechanisms & dampers collection to the Téchne shop, and this guide explains the differences between the types and how to choose correctly.

Gas pistons: the classic solution

The gas piston is the most widespread mechanism for lift-up fronts. It mounts between the cabinet side and the door, and its force — expressed in newtons (N) — supports the weight of the front. From the collection:

• Italiana Ferramenta K12 — a 224 mm piston, available in 80 N and 100 N versions, with automatic opening: once the movement starts, the piston lifts the door to the end by itself. Around 164 RON.
• Italiana Ferramenta Kraby — 224 mm, 60 N, with friction stop: the door stays exactly where you leave it, anywhere along its travel. Useful when you want the door only half-open. Around 217 RON.

The selection rule: the larger and heavier the front (painted MDF weighs more than chipboard — see our chipboard vs MDF comparison), the more force you need, or two pistons, one on each side. A piston that is too weak lets the door drop; one that is too strong makes it hard to close.

Lift sets and door lifts

For wider fronts or finer control of the opening angle, the collection includes the Kesse mechanisms:

• Kesse Duo lift set for wooden doors, with a selectable opening angle of 75°, 90° or 110° — from around 54 RON, the entry point of the range;
• Kesse Maxi lift model C (white, around 148 RON) and model D (black, around 156 RON) — lifts with the same selectable angles, in a finish matched to the cabinet interior.

The angle matters more than it seems: at 75° the door stays partly above the cabinet and you can easily reach it to close it; at 110° it rises almost fully vertical and frees up all access — but you need clear space above the cabinet. Measure the distance to the ceiling before choosing, especially for wall-mounted cabinets installed high.

Lifts for beds with storage boxes

The same family of mechanisms solves a completely different problem too: the bed with storage space under the mattress. The slatted base lifts on spring mechanisms, and the box beneath it becomes the roomiest “drawer” in the bedroom:

• Riex JP81 — single-spring bed lift, left + right in the pack, around 73 RON;
• Riex JP82 — two springs, for heavier bases, around 109 RON;
• Riex JP86 — a complete bed-box lifting mechanism, left + right, around 1,714 RON — the heavy-duty solution for large beds, also used in series production.

Dampers: silent closing, added later

If your furniture already exists and the only problem is slamming, you do not need to replace the hardware. External dampers mount inside the cabinet, with the included template, in minutes:

• Riex NP11 — external damper for metal-box drawers, 2 pieces (left/right) plus mounting template, around 33 RON;
• Riex NR09 — the equivalent for drawers on roller slides, also 2 pieces with template, around 30 RON;
• Riex ES65 — a damper for medium-sized cabinet doors, around 124 RON.

For sliding wardrobe door systems, the collection also includes dedicated Riex VR30/VR31 dampers, side or central, in door-weight steps from 10 to 50 kg — important: choose the damper by the actual weight of the door, otherwise it either fails to brake or resists opening.

How to choose, in short

• Wall cabinet with a small front → K12 gas piston; the automatic version if you want full opening from one touch.
• You want the door to stop in any position → Kraby with friction stop.
• Wide front, controlled angle → Kesse Duo or Maxi lift, with the angle suited to your ceiling clearance.
• Bed with a storage box → JP81/JP82 for usual bases, JP86 for large beds.
• Existing furniture that slams → external dampers NP11/NR09/ES65 — the cheapest comfort upgrade there is, from 30 RON.
