How much does it cost to furnish a living room with custom furniture?

The living room is the most visible room in the house — the place where you receive guests, relax in the evening and where most of family life takes place. Living room furniture must be simultaneously aesthetic (it is every visitor's first impression), functional (storage for electronics, books, decorations) and proportionate to the room's dimensions. Custom furniture addresses all these requirements, but how much does it actually cost?

What furniture pieces make up a living room?

Unlike the bedroom where the wardrobe dominates the budget, in the living room the pieces are more varied and more balanced in price:

• TV sideboard — the central piece, positioned below the television. Can be wall-mounted or floor-standing. Stores electronic equipment, cables and everyday items.
• Wall-mounted cabinets — mounted above or beside the TV sideboard, they create a complete visual ensemble (TV wall). Can have doors or open compartments for decorations.
• Room divider / bookcase — a freestanding piece that visually separates two zones (living from dining, for example) without building a wall. Accessible from both sides.
• Storage sideboard — an additional sideboard for tableware, bottles, board games or other items. Usually taller than the TV sideboard (80-100 cm) and positioned on a side wall.

Simple budget: 3,000 - 6,000 RON (TV sideboard)

If you start with a single piece, the TV sideboard is the logical choice — it is the visual center of the living room. At this budget, you get:

• Suspended sideboard 160-200 cm wide, 35-45 cm deep, 40-50 cm tall
• 2-3 compartments with doors and 1-2 open compartments
• Material: melamine chipboard carcass, chipboard or painted MDF fronts
• Push-to-open system or minimalist handles

Example: suspended sideboard 180x40x45 cm, white chipboard carcass, cashmere grey painted MDF fronts, 2 doors + 1 open compartment — approximately 3,500-5,000 RON.

The floor-standing version is 10-15% cheaper (does not require wall mounting brackets and plasterboard backing), but the suspended version offers a more modern look and makes cleaning under the furniture easier.

Mid-range budget: 6,000 - 12,000 RON (complete TV wall)

The TV wall is the most impactful visual ensemble in the living room — the TV sideboard plus wall-mounted cabinets above or beside it, creating a unified composition across the entire wall. At this budget:

• Suspended TV sideboard (180-240 cm): 3,000-5,500 RON
• 2-3 wall-mounted cabinets above the sideboard (60-90 cm wide each, 25-35 cm deep): 2,000-4,500 RON
• Open shelf or rack on the side (optional): 500-1,500 RON

Our advice: choose the same color and material for all TV wall pieces. Even though they are separate pieces (sideboard + wall cabinets), material coherence makes them look like a single integrated ensemble.

The variant with ribbed MDF on wall cabinet fronts and solid painted MDF on the sideboard creates an elegant texture contrast without complicating the color palette. This combination is one of the most popular choices for modern living rooms.

Complete budget: 12,000 - 20,000 RON (full living room)

A fully furnished living room with custom pieces includes:

• Complete TV wall (sideboard + wall cabinets): 5,000-9,000 RON
• Room divider / bookcase (150-200 cm wide, 200-240 cm tall): 4,000-7,000 RON
• Side storage sideboard (120-160 cm wide, 80-100 cm tall): 2,500-4,500 RON

The room divider: an alternative to walls

One of the most interesting furniture types for the living room is the room divider. It is a bookcase or storage unit that visually separates two zones without blocking light or building a permanent wall.

Advantages:

• Defines space without a wall — ideal for open-plan apartments where you want to separate the living area from the dining zone or home office
• Accessible from both sides — you can have open shelves accessible from both the living room and the dining area
• Double storage — a 200 cm tall divider offers storage on both faces, the equivalent of two furniture pieces in one
• Flexibility — not fixed to the wall, can be moved or reconfigured

Suspended vs. floor-standing: living room comparison

In the living room, the choice between suspended and floor-standing furniture affects both aesthetics and budget:

• Suspended — modern, airy look. The floor remains clear, cleaning is easy. Requires a solid wall (concrete or brick) or plasterboard with special fixings. Cost 10-15% higher than the floor-standing version.
• Floor-standing — maximum stability, does not depend on wall type. More dimension options (can be deeper and taller). Cost 10-15% lower. Ideal if the wall cannot support heavy weight.

In practice, the ideal combination for a TV wall is: suspended sideboard (30-40 cm off the floor) + wall-mounted cabinets above (40-60 cm above the sideboard). This composition creates a floating, modern and functional TV wall.

Tips to maximize visual impact

• Proportions — the TV sideboard should be at least 20 cm wider than the television on each side. A 140 cm TV (55 inches) needs a sideboard of minimum 180 cm.
• Symmetry or intentional asymmetry — two identical wall cabinets, symmetrical around the TV, create a classic look. One large cabinet on the side and one small one above create a dynamic, more modern asymmetry.
• Lighting — LED strip under the suspended sideboard (not included in price, but easy to install) creates a spectacular floating effect in the evening.
• Colors — in the living room, neutral colors (white, grey, natural oak) are the safest choices. A single piece in an accent color (green, blue, terracotta) can become the focal point.
