How Much Does Custom Furniture Cost in 2026? Complete Price Guide

Find out how much a custom wardrobe, closet or sideboard costs in 2026. Real price ranges, cost factors and how to get the best value for money.

One of the most frequent questions we receive is: “How much does custom furniture cost?” The answer depends on several factors, but in this guide we provide real price ranges and explain what influences the final cost.

Indicative Price Ranges (2026)

Prices vary based on dimensions, materials and complexity. Here are some estimates for melamine chipboard furniture with quality hardware:

  • Wardrobe / bedroom closet (200-300 cm width) — 3,500 - 7,000 RON
  • Hallway wardrobe (100-180 cm width) — 2,000 - 4,500 RON
  • Sideboard (80-160 cm width) — 1,500 - 3,500 RON
  • Wall cabinet (60-120 cm width) — 800 - 2,200 RON
  • Room divider (200-300 cm width) — 3,000 - 6,500 RON

These prices include VAT, production and materials. Transport and assembly are calculated separately.

What Influences the Price?

1. Dimensions

The larger the furniture, the higher the price — but not proportionally. A 250 cm wardrobe doesn't cost double compared to a 125 cm one, because many components (plinths, caps, basic hardware) are identical.

2. Body and Front Materials

Melamine chipboard is the most accessible: available in hundreds of colors, durable and easy to maintain. Painted MDF costs 30-50% more but offers perfectly smooth surfaces and any RAL color. Natural veneer is the premium option, 50-80% above chipboard.

3. Hardware

Standard hinges and slides are included in the price. Upgrading to premium hardware (Hafele) adds 200-600 RON per piece of furniture, but significantly extends its lifespan.

4. Accessories

Internal drawers, organization systems, LED lighting, extractable trouser rails — each accessory adds to the cost but improves functionality.

Price Per Linear Meter: Myth or Reality?

Many customers ask about price per linear meter. This metric is useful only as a general guide. A simple wardrobe with shelves costs ~1,500-2,000 RON/lm, while a complex one with drawers and clothing rails can reach 3,000-4,000 RON/lm. That's why a configurator that calculates the exact price based on chosen specifications is much more accurate.

Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf: What's Cheaper Long-Term?

A budget off-the-shelf wardrobe costs 1,000-2,500 RON but has fixed dimensions and medium-quality hardware. After 5-7 years, it usually needs replacement.

A custom wardrobe costs 3,500-7,000 RON but fits perfectly in the space, has premium hardware and lasts 15-20 years. The annual cost is actually lower for custom furniture.

How to Find the Exact Price?

The fastest method is to use an online configurator. Choose dimensions, materials, compartmentalization and accessories — and see the price in real time, without waiting for a quote. At Téchne, the displayed price includes everything: materials, production and hardware.

Price Breakdown: What Makes Up the Cost?

The price of custom furniture is not an arbitrary number. Each component has a clear cost, and at Téchne you can see them in the configurator as you add elements. Here is the typical cost structure:

The Body (Carcass) — 40-50% of the Price

The body includes side panels, shelves, top and bottom panels, the back and the plinth. At Téchne, all bodies are made from 18 mm melamine chipboard with 2 mm ABS edge banding applied with polyurethane (PUR) adhesive. The 18 mm thickness is the industry standard for quality furniture — 15-16 mm boards are cheaper but warp over time under load. The body cost depends directly on the volume of material (in square meters of chipboard) and the number of compartments.

Fronts (Doors) — 20-35% of the Price

Hinged doors are the main visible element and influence the final look the most. Options available at Téchne:

  • Melamine chipboard — most accessible, available in hundreds of decors (oak, walnut, white, gray, concrete)
  • Painted MDF Soft Touch — matte, velvety surface, 49 RAL/NCS colors. Cost ~30-40% more than chipboard.
  • Painted MDF High Gloss — glossy surface, mirror effect. Similar price to Soft Touch.
  • Ribbed MDF (fluted) — vertical milled grooves, premium modern look. Cost ~40-50% more than chipboard.

Hardware — 10-15% of the Price

Hardware includes hinges, drawer slides, handles or push-to-open systems. At Téchne, the standard hardware is from Häfele — soft-close hinges and full-extension drawer slides. Premium hardware may seem like a small additional cost (200-600 RON per piece of furniture), but it determines long-term durability: cheap hinges misalign after 2-3 years, while Häfele ones last 15-20 years and over 80,000 opening cycles.

Accessories — 5-15% of the Price

Internal drawers, clothing rails, shoe organization systems, integrated LED lighting and additional shelves add to the base cost. Each accessory is optional and you can see exactly how much it adds to the price in the Téchne configurator.

What Influences the Price the Most?

Among all factors, these three have the greatest impact on the final price:

  1. Total size — a 300 cm wardrobe costs ~60-70% more than a 150 cm one (not double, because fixed components remain the same).
  2. Front type — switching from melamine chipboard to painted MDF can add 1,000-2,500 RON to a medium-sized wardrobe.
  3. Number of drawers — each drawer with full-extension slides costs 150-300 RON, and a wardrobe with 6-8 drawers vs. one with only shelves can differ by 1,000-2,000 RON.
