How Long Does Custom Furniture Take? From Configuration to Installation

Find out how long the entire custom furniture process takes: configuration, production, delivery and installation. Detailed stages and tips to reduce waiting time.

One of the most frequent questions about custom furniture is: "How long does it take?" The short answer: from configuration to installation, the complete process takes between 3 and 5 weeks. Here's each stage in detail.

Stage 1: Configuration and Order (1-3 days)

With an online configurator, this stage is dramatically reduced. Instead of 1-2 weeks of showroom visits, measurements with a designer and waiting for a quote, you can:

  • Enter exact dimensions (width, height, depth)
  • Choose materials and colors
  • Configure compartmentalization (shelves, rails, drawers)
  • See the price in real time
  • Place the order directly

Everything in 15-30 minutes, from your phone or computer, 24/7.

What Happens After You Place Your Order in the Configurator

Many people wonder what goes on behind the scenes after pressing the "Order" button. Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. Automatic confirmation: You receive a confirmation email with details of your configuration — dimensions, materials, compartmentalization, total price. This email also contains a link to the saved configuration that you can review at any time.
  2. Order number assignment: Your order receives a unique identification number that you can use in any subsequent communication.
  3. Technical team assignment: Within 24 hours, a production engineer analyzes the configuration and verifies technical feasibility.
  4. Confirmation contact: If everything is in order, you receive a final confirmation email. If the technical team identifies optimization opportunities (for example, better shelf positioning for increased strength), they contact you with a suggestion before entering production.

Stage 2: Technical Verification (1-2 days)

After placing the order, the technical team verifies the configuration: component compatibility, structural strength, cutting optimizations. If adjustments are needed, we contact you for confirmation.

Stage 3: Production (10-18 working days)

This is the longest stage. Production includes:

  • CNC cutting — panels are cut to exact dimensions
  • Edging — applying edges (ABS or laser) on all visible margins
  • Drilling and milling — holes for hardware, hinges, dowels
  • Partial assembly — components are pre-assembled where possible
  • Quality control — each piece is checked before packaging

Production time varies by complexity: a simple wardrobe is produced in 10-12 days, a complex one with multiple door types and drawers can take 15-18 days.

Detailed Production Phase Breakdown

To understand why production takes 2-3 weeks and not 2-3 days, it helps to know the complexity of each phase:

  • Day 1-2: Cut planning. Optimization software calculates how to cut panels most efficiently from standard boards, minimizing material waste. A complex configuration (5-6 columns, interior drawers, mirror doors) can generate 40-60 individual pieces.
  • Day 3-5: CNC cutting. Panels are cut with ±0.1 mm precision on CNC machines. Each piece is labeled with a barcode for traceability throughout the production flow.
  • Day 6-8: Edging. ABS edges of 0.4-2 mm are applied on visible margins. Laser bonding (no visible adhesive) requires specialized equipment and careful calibration.
  • Day 9-11: Drilling and milling. Holes for hinges, dowels, confirmat screws and slides are made on CNC drilling machines. Positioning is critical — a 1 mm deviation means a crooked door.
  • Day 12-14: Pre-assembly and quality control. Components are checked dimensionally, tested for fitting and packaged in assembly order.

Stage 4: Delivery (1-3 days)

Furniture is packed in protective cardboard boxes and delivered with specialized transport. At Téchne, delivery is made within 24-48 hours of production completion, across all of Romania.

Stage 5: Installation (1 day)

Installation is done by a specialized team, directly at your home. Installation time varies:

  • Simple wardrobe (150-200 cm) — 2-3 hours
  • Complex closet (250-350 cm) — 4-6 hours
  • Sideboard or wall cabinet — 1-2 hours

What Can Delay the Process

Normally, the 3-5 week timeline is met with accuracy. However, certain factors can extend the process:

  • Post-order changes: Any modification (even a small one, like changing a drawer color) partially resets the process. If the order has already entered production, some pieces may need to be re-cut.
  • Unavailable special materials: Popular colors (white, oak, grey) are always in stock. But a special decor (for example, a synchronised-pore oak texture) may have a 5-7 day additional procurement lead time.
  • Peak season: February-March (spring renovations) and August-September (pre-school/autumn preparations) are the busiest periods. During these months, lead times can be 5-7 days longer. If you have flexibility, order in January or June for shorter timelines.
  • Site access: Delivery and installation require vehicle access to the building and floor access (elevator or stairs). If you live on the 5th floor without an elevator, installation may take longer due to carrying pieces upstairs.

How to Speed Things Up

Some concrete tips to reduce total time:

  • Measure correctly the first time: The most frequent cause of delay is redesign after incorrect measurements. Measure twice, check with a spirit level, note dimensions in millimeters.
  • Use the online configurator: Save 1-2 weeks compared to the traditional method (showroom visit, measurements, quote, counter-offer, order).
  • Respond quickly: If the technical team contacts you for confirmation, respond the same day. Each day waiting for confirmation is a day added to the total timeline.
  • Choose standard materials: Permanently stocked colors (white, natural oak, anthracite grey) require no additional procurement time.

What Influences Total Duration?

  • Project complexity — a single wardrobe vs. complete bedroom furnishing
  • Special materials — painted MDF requires additional drying time
  • Seasonality — during peak periods (February-March, August-September) lead times may be longer
  • Post-order changes — any change partially resets the process

Comparison: Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf

Off-the-shelf furniture is available in 1-7 days, but doesn't fit the space and has limited options. Custom furniture takes 3-5 weeks, but the result is exactly what you want — perfect dimensions, materials chosen by you, personalized compartmentalization.

Compared to IKEA, where delivery times for bedroom furniture can reach 2-4 weeks (with DIY assembly included), Téchne furniture adds only 1-2 extra weeks but arrives fully professionally assembled and fits the space perfectly. When you also factor in the 4-8 hours of DIY assembly you save, the time difference becomes negligible.

Is the wait worth it? Absolutely — because the result lasts 15-20 years. Every Téchne order goes through manual verification by a human operator before being launched into production — a safety step that prevents any errors.
