Guest room furniture -- multifunctional solutions

Custom furniture for a guest room that doubles as an office or storage: wardrobe with desk area, room dividers, floating cabinets and configuration tips.

The guest room is, more often than not, the most underused room in the house. Guests visit a few times a year, yet the room occupies space all year round. The solution: multifunctional custom furniture that transforms this room into a daily-use space -- an office, storage area, or reading nook -- without sacrificing comfort when guests do arrive. In this guide, we explore smart configurations you can design in the Techne configurator.

The wardrobe with an integrated desk area

The most efficient solution for a guest-room-slash-office is a wardrobe with a built-in desk niche. In practice, a 240-280 cm wide wardrobe features a central opening of 80-100 cm width and 75 cm height (at standard desk height), with enclosed storage on either side.

Recommended configuration:

  • Total width: 240-280 cm (spanning an entire wall)
  • Height: 230-250 cm (floor to ceiling)
  • Depth: 50-60 cm (enough for both hanging clothes and a desktop)
  • Desk area: central niche 80-100 cm wide, 75 cm from the floor, 50 cm deep
  • Above the niche: 2-3 open shelves for books, decorative boxes, or documents
  • Left section: compartment with hanging rail and a lower shelf for luggage
  • Right section: shelves and drawers for general storage

When guests arrive, the desk area can be quickly covered with a decorative panel or simply left as is -- a desk in the guest room is a bonus, not an obstacle.

Room divider with storage

If you do not have a dedicated room but rather an open space you want to partition (for example, a large living room), a room divider with built-in storage solves two problems at once: it creates privacy for the guest and adds storage space.

A divider measuring 200 cm wide and 220 cm tall, with open compartments on the living room side and doors on the sleeping side, works as a movable wall. The advantage over a plasterboard wall: you can reconfigure it at any time, and the interior space is usable.

Practical dimensions:

  • Width: 160-240 cm
  • Height: 200-230 cm (lower than the ceiling to allow light and air circulation)
  • Depth: 40-45 cm (enough for shelves on both sides)

Floating cabinets -- floor space freed, wall space used

Floating cabinets are an excellent solution for a guest room. Mounted at 100-120 cm from the floor, they leave room underneath for a chair, a suitcase, or a laundry basket. On the wall above the bed, a floating cabinet of 150-200 cm width and 35 cm depth offers storage for spare bed linen, towels, and guest toiletries.

Key advantages:

  • No floor space taken -- the room feels more spacious
  • Easy access -- at arm height, no bending required
  • Modern look -- the suspended line creates an airy visual effect

In the configurator, you can set the mounting height, the number of compartments, and the door type (hinged, push-to-open, or open shelving).

Bedside-cabinet hybrid -- two functions, one piece

Instead of a classic 40x40 cm bedside table, configure a vertical unit 45 cm wide, 40 cm deep, and 120-140 cm tall. The top section (the first 30 cm) functions as a bedside surface -- space for a lamp, phone, and book. The rest is storage: a drawer and two compartments with doors.

This configuration is ideal when the guest room has limited space beside the bed. You get the bedside function plus additional storage in a single piece, without adding a second item of furniture.

Configuration tips for the guest room

When designing furniture for this room, think in terms of dual functionality:

  • Include at least 60 cm of hanging rail -- even if guests stay only a few days, they need somewhere to hang clothes. A 60 cm section holds 8-10 hangers.
  • Add an empty lower shelf (40-50 cm height) in the wardrobe -- a place for the guest's luggage, which otherwise ends up on the floor or on the bed.
  • Choose neutral, light colours -- matte white, light oak, or warm grey make the room appear larger and more welcoming.
  • Mirror on the wardrobe door -- eliminates the need for a separate wall mirror and adds visual depth.
  • Push-to-open on floating cabinets -- clean look, no handles, and comfortable opening at arm height.

What are the minimum dimensions for a guest room?

A functional guest-room-office needs at least 9 sqm (3 x 3 m). In this space, you can fit a 140 cm bed, a 240 cm wide wardrobe with integrated desk, and comfortable circulation. Below 9 sqm, skip the desk and focus on a slim 35 cm deep wardrobe and a floating cabinet.

Your guest room can be the most versatile room in the house -- if the furniture is designed for it. Configure a wardrobe with a desk niche, a storage divider, or floating cabinets directly in the Techne 3D configurator. Choose the dimensions, compartment layout, and finishes, and the result will be a room that works for you 360 days a year -- and for your guests the other 5.
