Extra shelf drilling: repositionable shelves in the Téchne configurator
New in the configurator: add extra rows of holes and move your shelves up or down anytime. How it works, what it costs and when it is really worth adding.
One of the classic compromises of made-to-measure furniture used to be that shelves ended up exactly where you drew them — and stayed there. A year later your sweater collection has grown, your storage boxes have changed, and the spacing between shelves no longer fits. We recently launched an option in the Téchne configurator that solves exactly this problem: extra shelf drilling.
What extra drilling is
Extra rows of holes are machined into the side panels of the compartment, above and below the standard position of each shelf. This means that after installation you can move a shelf higher or lower at any time, with no special tools and no technician: lift the shelf out, move the supports to the holes you want, and set it back at the new level.
The holes are drilled on the CNC machines in our factory, in the same production cycle as the rest of the cabinet — so the precision and alignment are identical to the standard holes, not an improvisation done later with a hand drill.
How to add it in the configurator
You will find the option in the Interior accessories area, under the category for extra shelf drilling. There are two tools, which you drag directly onto the wardrobe in the 3D scene, just like any other accessory:
- Compartment drilling — applies the drilling only to the compartment you dropped the tool on. Useful when you know only the sweater zone or the shelf above the hanging rail needs flexibility.
- Column drilling — applies the drilling to the whole column, top to bottom. If a compartment in that column already had individual drilling, it is automatically replaced by the column drilling, so you never pay twice for the same area.
The drilling shows up immediately in the 3D view, on the sides of the compartment, so you see exactly what you are ordering. If you change your mind, you remove it like any other accessory, from that compartment, and the price updates instantly.
What it costs
The rate is 0.5 RON per centimetre of drilled height and includes both rows of holes a shelf needs (front and back). A few reference points:
- a compartment with 60 cm of usable height — around 30 RON;
- a 100 cm compartment — around 50 RON;
- a full wardrobe column of 236 cm — around 118 RON.
The amount appears as a separate accessory line in the order summary, so it is not hidden in the total — you see exactly what the flexibility costs and can drop it if the budget is tight.
When extra drilling is worth it
Honestly: not everywhere. Based on the projects we have delivered, we recommend using it selectively:
- Shelf zones for folded clothes — this is where needs change most often; stacks of t-shirts in summer are not the same height as thick winter sweaters.
- Children's rooms — a wardrobe configured for a 4-year-old will store completely different things at 10. Column drilling lets you reorganise the entire interior without buying new furniture. See also our guide on furniture for children's rooms.
- Bookcases and open shelving — books, decorations and boxes come in all heights, and being able to move a shelf a few centimetres completely changes what fits.
On the other hand, zones with a fixed purpose — the hanging-rail compartment, drawers, the interior elements area (pull-out baskets, trouser racks) — do not need extra drilling, because there the position of the components is dictated by the accessory itself.
Other configurator news
Along with extra drilling we shipped a few usability improvements you will notice right away:
- Doors open wide on hover — when you move the mouse over a cabinet, the doors now open to 80° (up from 33°), so you can clearly see the interior and the placed accessories.
- The “i” button on accessories — every interior accessory now has an info icon that opens a window with its description and mounting conditions, right inside the configurator.
- Faster 3D rendering — the scene redraws only when needed and edges are smoother, including on modest laptops.
Try it on your own project
Open the configurator, pick a wardrobe or walk-in unit, then drag the compartment drilling tool over the shelf area. You instantly see both the holes in 3D and the cost in the summary.
