Wardrobe with integrated LED lighting -- 2026 trend
Integrated LED lighting for wardrobes: LED strip types, warm vs cool light, motion sensors, optimal placement, and how to combine with Techne furniture.
Integrated LED lighting has become a standard in premium furniture. It is no longer just about aesthetics -- a wardrobe or dressing room with interior lighting lets you find what you need quickly, eliminates shadows in corners, and turns a utilitarian piece into a design element. In this article, we explore the types of LEDs available, where to mount them for maximum effect, and how to integrate them with a Techne custom wardrobe.
Why LED and not other light sources?
LED strips are ideal for furniture for several practical reasons:
- Minimal thickness (2-3 mm): they mount in very tight spaces, under shelves or in aluminium channels, without reducing storage space.
- Low consumption: a 5-metre LED strip uses 15-30W -- the equivalent of a single classic bulb. You can leave the lighting on for hours with negligible energy impact.
- No significant heat: unlike halogen bulbs, LEDs do not heat the wardrobe interior. Clothes, shoes, and accessories stay safe.
- Long lifespan: 30,000-50,000 hours, which translates to over 10 years of daily use.
Types of LED strips for furniture
Not all LED strips are the same. For furniture, three criteria matter: colour temperature, LED density, and protection rating.
Colour temperature:
- Warm light (2700-3000K) -- yellowish, relaxing tones. Ideal for bedrooms and dressing rooms. Clothes and accessories look natural under this light.
- Neutral light (4000K) -- balanced white tones. Suited for hallways, bathrooms, and areas where colour accuracy matters (for instance, when choosing an outfit in the morning).
- Cool light (5000-6500K) -- bluish, energising tones. Rarely used in furniture, but can work in a bathroom cabinet or workspace area.
Our recommendation: 3000K for bedrooms and dressing rooms, 4000K for hallways and bathrooms.
LED density:
- 60 LEDs/m -- uniform light, sufficient for ambient illumination inside the wardrobe.
- 120 LEDs/m -- stronger and more even light, recommended when the wardrobe is the primary light source in the area (for example, a windowless dressing room).
Protection rating: for furniture interiors, IP20 (no water protection) is sufficient. In bathrooms, choose at least IP44.
Where to mount LEDs in a wardrobe
Placement matters as much as the strip type. Here are the most effective positions:
Under shelves: the most popular position. An LED strip mounted on the underside of each shelf illuminates the contents of the shelf below. The result: every level of the wardrobe has its own light source, shadow-free.
In vertical aluminium channels: two profiles mounted on the interior side panels, 5 cm from the front edge. They illuminate the entire interior evenly and create a sense of depth.
Above the hanging rail: a strip mounted on the top panel, directly above the rail, lights up hanging garments and makes it easy to identify colours.
Inside drawers: a short LED segment (30-50 cm) mounted on the interior front edge of the drawer. Activated on opening via a motion sensor. Ideal for drawers holding accessories, watches, or jewellery.
Behind mirrors: for wardrobes with mirror doors, an LED strip mounted around the perimeter of the mirror (backlit) creates a luminous halo effect. Functional and decorative at the same time.
Motion sensors -- light only when you need it
PIR motion sensors are the perfect complement to LED lighting in furniture. They work simply: when you open the wardrobe door or walk past it, the light turns on automatically. After 30-60 seconds of inactivity, it switches off on its own.
Practical advantages:
- No fumbling for a switch in the dark
- Energy savings -- the light does not stay on if you forget
- The sensor mounts discreetly on the wardrobe's interior frame
Alternative: magnetic door sensors. The light turns on when the door opens and off when it closes. Simpler, but they do not work on open wardrobes (without doors).
Integration with Techne wardrobes
Wardrobes configured in the Techne configurator are ready for LED lighting. During installation, our team can add aluminium channels vertically or under shelves, depending on the chosen configuration. The wiring runs behind the wardrobe and connects to a 12V or 24V power supply hidden in the upper section.
A few recommended combinations:
- Dressing room with sliding doors + LED under each shelf + PIR sensor: complete, automatic, elegant illumination
- Hallway wardrobe with glass doors + vertical LEDs: light filters through the glass and creates a decorative effect even with the doors closed
- Chest of drawers + LED in each drawer with motion sensor: each drawer lights up individually when opened
LED lighting transforms an ordinary wardrobe into a premium piece of furniture at a surprisingly low cost (a complete LED strip with power supply and sensor starts at around 30 EUR). Configure your wardrobe in the Techne 3D configurator and discuss lighting options with our team when placing your order. The difference is visible -- literally.
