Handle finish comparison: chrome vs matte black vs gold

A comparative guide to handle finishes: chrome, matte black, and gold. Pros, cons, and how each pairs with different door materials and styles.

A handle is a small detail that radically changes the look of a piece of furniture. The same wardrobe, with the same doors, looks completely different with chrome, matte black, or gold handles. At Techne, we offer multiple handle finishes that pair with all the door types in our range — melamine chipboard (PAL), painted MDF, fluted MDF, and aluminium-frame doors with glass or mirror. Here is how the three main finishes compare, and how to choose the right one for your project.

Chrome — the versatile classic

Chrome is the most widespread and stylistically neutral finish. The shiny, reflective metallic surface integrates naturally into almost any context: modern, minimalist, classic, or transitional. If you are unsure which finish to choose, chrome is always a safe bet.

Pros: maximum versatility — it works with any door colour, from white and grey to warm or dark tones. Excellent resistance to corrosion and wear. Clean, professional appearance.

Cons: the glossy surface shows fingerprints and water spots. In a room with strong natural light, the reflections can be distracting. It needs frequent wiping to maintain an immaculate look.

Best paired with: white or grey melamine doors, painted MDF in neutral tones, aluminium-frame doors with clear glass or clear mirror. Chrome naturally complements aluminium, creating a unified metallic look.

Matte black — contemporary and practical

The matte black finish has gained significant popularity in recent years, becoming the go-to choice for contemporary, industrial, and Scandinavian interiors. The non-reflective matte surface offers strong contrast and a sophisticated feel.

Pros: hides fingerprints and marks almost completely — a major practical advantage over chrome. A dramatic, defined look that turns the handle into a design element in its own right. Works brilliantly as a focal point on light-coloured doors (white, beige, light oak).

Cons: on very dark doors (black, anthracite, wenge), the black handle disappears visually — it no longer creates contrast. On matte surfaces (Soft Touch MDF, for example), matte black can look too uniform, lacking visual dynamism.

Best paired with: light-coloured melamine doors (white, beige, oak), painted MDF in pastel or neutral tones, fluted MDF (the grooves create a play of light and shadow that complements the matte handle). The classic combination is a white wardrobe with matte black handles — it delivers a clean, contemporary look that fits easily into any bedroom or hallway.

Gold — elegant and on-trend

The gold (or brushed brass) finish is the leading interior-design trend in 2026. This is not the flashy gold of the 1980s but rather a matte, satin gold with warm undertones that adds refinement without being ostentatious. It is the choice for luxurious, art deco, mid-century modern, or boho interiors.

Pros: adds warmth to any piece of furniture — the effect is immediately visible. Fingerprints are less noticeable than on chrome thanks to the warm tone. Creates an elegant accent that elevates the perceived quality of the entire unit. Pairs beautifully with natural wood tones (oak, walnut) and warm colours (forest green, navy blue, terracotta).

Cons: less versatile than chrome — it does not work as well in entirely cool interiors (grey, pure white, concrete). Finish quality matters enormously: a cheap gold looks plastic, while a quality gold looks premium. Requires coordination with other metallic elements in the room (light fittings, taps, accessories) — mixing metals can look intentional or messy, depending on execution.

Best paired with: painted MDF in dark tones (forest green, navy, black), wood-textured melamine (oak, walnut), fluted MDF in warm tones. The combination of dark green MDF with gold handles is one of the most popular choices in 2026.

Alternatives: stainless steel and aluminium

Beyond the three main finishes, two more options are worth mentioning. Stainless steel offers a look similar to chrome but with a slightly different texture — less glossy, more industrial. It is extremely resistant to corrosion and ideal for areas with humidity (bathrooms, adjacent kitchens).

Natural aluminium (uncoated) has a matte, silvery appearance that is more understated than chrome. It pairs perfectly with aluminium-frame doors — the handle and frame share the same material and texture, creating complete visual coherence. It is the ideal choice for a minimalist, technical look.

How to coordinate the handle with the door material

The general rule: create contrast. A handle that blends into the door does not work aesthetically or practically (you cannot see it, you cannot find it intuitively). Here are some tested combinations:

White melamine + matte black — maximum contrast, contemporary look. The most popular combination in our range.

Natural oak melamine + gold — elegant, warm, sophisticated. Suited to bedrooms and living rooms.

Painted MDF (dark colour) + chrome — professional, balanced. Chrome brightens dark furniture without adding excessive warmth.

Fluted MDF + matte black — the groove texture and matte finish create an interesting visual dialogue. An industrial-elegant look.

Aluminium frame (glass) + chrome or natural aluminium — metallic coherence. The handle integrates with the frame, making the door feel like a single piece.

Smoked mirror + gold — a dramatic combination, perfect for dressing rooms or statement zones. The warm gold balances the coolness of the dark mirror.
