Custom Bedroom Sideboard: Configuration Guide

How to configure the perfect bedroom sideboard: dimensions, drawers, materials and design tips. Everything you need to know.

The bedroom sideboard is the piece of furniture that combines storage with aesthetics. It's the place for underwear, accessories and everyday items, but also an important decorative element. A custom sideboard gives you exactly what you need.

Optimal Dimensions

  • Width: 80-160 cm (depending on available space)
  • Height: 80-100 cm (comfortable for standing use)
  • Depth: 40-50 cm (sufficient for folded clothes)

A wider sideboard (120-160 cm) can also serve as a vanity table if you add a mirror above.

Dimensions in Relation to the Bed and Bedroom

A sideboard does not exist in isolation — it needs to integrate harmoniously into the bedroom. Here are some practical rules:

  • Sideboard height vs. bed height: Ideally, the sideboard should be at the same height as the mattress or slightly taller (5-15 cm above). For a standard bed with a mattress at 50-55 cm, a 60-70 cm sideboard works well if you sit in bed and want easy access to items. If the sideboard is on the wall opposite the bed, the optimal height increases to 80-100 cm for comfortable standing access.
  • Width relative to the wall: The sideboard should occupy between 50-75% of the wall width where you place it. Too narrow on a wide wall looks lost; too wide creates a cramped impression. A 200 cm wall pairs perfectly with a 120-140 cm sideboard, leaving 30-40 cm on each side for visual breathing room.
  • Depth and circulation: Between the sideboard and bed there should be at least 60 cm for comfortable movement. If the bedroom is small (under 12 sqm), choose a 40 cm deep sideboard. If you have generous space, 50 cm provides more storage capacity.

What to Store in a Bedroom Sideboard

A well-designed sideboard covers all bedroom storage needs, complementing the main wardrobe:

  • Top drawers (small, 10-12 cm): Jewelry, watches, glasses, hair accessories, phone chargers, hand cream — items you use daily and want quick access to.
  • Middle drawers (medium, 15-18 cm): Underwear, socks, folded t-shirts, pajamas. Use drawer dividers (available at any organization store) to maintain order.
  • Bottom drawers (large, 20-25 cm): Sweaters, sweatpants, sportswear, spare bed linen. Large bottom drawers are also ideal for seasonal storage — light blankets in summer, beachwear in winter.
  • Sideboard top surface: Ambient lamp, photo frame, a small plant, a decorative tray for pocket items. The top also serves as an improvised vanity if you add a mirror on the wall above.

Drawer Configuration

The most practical configuration for a bedroom sideboard:

  • 2 small drawers on top (10-12 cm height) — for accessories, jewelry, watches
  • 2-3 large drawers below (18-22 cm height) — for underwear, folded t-shirts, pants

All drawers with full extension — you can access the content at the back of the drawer without removing everything from the front.

Drawers vs. Doors: What to Choose

The classic sideboard has only drawers, but a combination of drawers and doors can be more practical in certain situations:

  • Drawers only (classic option): Best access to contents — you see everything at a glance. Ideal for underwear, accessories, folded clothes. Disadvantage: tall objects (bottles, boxes) do not fit in shallow drawers.
  • Drawers on top + door compartment below: Small top drawers for accessories, the door compartment below for larger objects — decorative pillows, storage baskets, electronics (router, external hard drive). This configuration is also popular for living room sideboards.
  • Drawers + open niche: An open niche (no door or drawer) at countertop level is perfect for a tablet, books currently being read or Bluetooth speakers. The open niche also adds a visual accent that breaks the monotony of closed fronts.

Materials and Design

For the bedroom, the most popular combinations are:

  • Natural oak body + white fronts — Scandinavian, bright, timeless
  • All matte white — minimalist, integrates into any decor
  • Walnut or dark ash — warm, elegant, suitable for bedrooms with earthy tones

No visible handles (push-to-open) or integrated profile handles give a modern, clean look.

Coordinating with Other Bedroom Furniture

A custom sideboard offers a huge advantage over a prefabricated one: you can choose exactly the same materials and colors as the rest of your furniture. At Téchne, all furniture pieces (wardrobe, sideboard, nightstands, wall cabinet) are configured from the same material palette. This means:

  • Exactly the same color — not "almost the same" but identical, from the same material batch
  • Same hardware — hinges, slides and opening systems uniform across all furniture
  • Same handle style — or the same push-to-open system, for a coherent look
  • Same edge quality — laser bonding on all pieces, with no visible differences

This visual coherence is impossible when buying pieces from different manufacturers or different stores.

Integration with Nightstands

If your bedroom is compact, the sideboard can partially take over the nightstand function. A 160 cm sideboard placed on the side wall of the bed can also serve as a nightstand for one side, saving space. Alternatively, you can configure an asymmetric sideboard — wider on one side (main storage zone) and narrower on the other (nightstand zone, with a single drawer and surface for a lamp). In the Téchne configurator, you can adjust the width of each column independently, creating exactly the configuration you need.

Téchne Configurator Advantages for Bedroom Furniture

The Téchne online 3D configurator transforms the sideboard design process from a compromise into a creative experience: The intelligent system guides you at every step — it automatically checks if dimensions are feasible and if the chosen materials are compatible with each other.

  • Realistic 3D visualization — see exactly how your sideboard will look, with chosen materials and colors, before ordering
  • Dimensions to the centimeter — you are not limited to 3-4 standard sizes; enter exactly the width, height and depth you want
  • Flexible compartmentalization — add, remove or resize drawers and shelves with a click
  • Real-time pricing — every change updates the price instantly, with no surprises at the end
  • Save and return — you can save the configuration and return later for adjustments

How Much Does a Custom Sideboard Cost?

A bedroom sideboard of 100-120 cm width costs between 1,500-3,000 RON, depending on the number of drawers, materials and hardware. Full-extension soft-close drawers are included at Téchne.
